Elon Musk, the billionaire and soon-to-be adviser in Donald Trump’s administration, stirred controversy in the German election campaign by endorsing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. On December 20, Musk declared on his platform, X (formerly Twitter), that “Only the AfD can save Germany.”
The AfD, known for its pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian stance, is currently polling second ahead of Germany’s early elections on February 23, 2025. However, mainstream political parties have vowed not to cooperate with the AfD at the national level. The election follows the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left coalition government.
